CROATIA IN EU - di Enrico Lastrico

Croatia will remember the 20th January 2012 as an historic day. A very important referendum for the future of this Country was held on this date. The citizens have expressed their opinion about the entry of Croatia in European Union, they have given favorable opinion. The victory of yes to European community has been clear, the citizens who have answered positively has been two thirds of voters. Citizens hope to leave behind their recent past. Croatia was a Constituent Country of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. When the dominion of Serbia in Yugoslavia and the will of Milosevic to realize the project of “Great Serbia” was evident Croatia declared its independency from Belgrade.
The army intervened and the war broke out, the wounds caused by conflict are visible yet. The Croatian citizens hope to achieve the peace, the welfare and the opportunities that the Countries of European Union have obtained with the adhesion to the community. The people wish the peace that reigns in the founding members of community and within European Union from fifty years. The people wish the welfare that persists in EU although some persons try to deny it with superficial analysis of the current economic crisis. The Croatian referendum has shown that the hope of an united Europe is still alive in the hearts of the continent’s citizens. People have shown great maturity, they have joined to EU even if the community was very absent, how other international organizations, during the conflict in Balkans. They have understood that the community can gain credibility in the international arena only becoming more united and there is no future for the Countries of continent outside European Union. Welcome Croatia!
