The next
31th may Irish will express with a referendum their opinion about the
Stability Treaty that the European Council approved in January. In
accordance with the Irish constitution the Agreement must be ratified
with a referendum. The most mainly parties are favorable to the
Treaty. The movements that are making campaign in favour of Yes are:
Fine Gael (center – right party of Christian - democratic and
conservative positions, pro – European party and member of European
People’s Party), Fianna Fáil
– The Republican Party (movement of liberal - democratic and
conservative positions and member of Alliance of Liberals and
Democrats for Europe) and Labour Party (a movement of social –
democratic inspiration and member of Progressive Alliance of
Socialists and Democrats). Contrary to the Treaty are Sinn
Féin (social - nationalist party and member of European United Left
– Nordic Green Left) and Socialist Party (movement that bases its
ideology on Trotskyismn). The European Authority will follow the
referendum with attention, the Irish citizens rejected with
referendum two European Treaties in the past. Subsequently, after a
better information about the Agreements, they approved the Treaties.
European Union hopes that Irish citizens will approve the Stability
Treaty immediately.
The ratification of Treaty does not prevent the possibility of reaching a better Agreement in future. The victory of no would cause for Ireland serious direct consequences (The Country would not enter in European Stability Mechanism, the new support fund for ailing economies that ensures very low interest loans and hopes investors to help to revive the economy of the Country) and indirect consequences. The victory of no does not benefit to European Union, community which Ireland is part and that is in a difficult moment.
