THE QUEEN OF UNITED KINGDOM ELISABETH II WENT TO REPUBLIC OF IRELAND FOR A STATE VIST IN MAY - di Enrico Lastrico

The Queen of United Kingdom Elisabeth II has gone to Republic of Ireland for a state visit this year. She has been the first British Head of State doing a journey in the Atlantic Country. This gesture has represented an important step in the path of reconciliation between United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. The State Authorities are working for a real and full peace between the Countries in these years. Anglo-Norman invaded Ireland in 1171.
They were led by the English King Henry II, so the island became a colony of England’s Kingdom. Subsequently, with the Act of Supremacy, Henry VIII adopted the title of King of Ireland. The island remained a Kingdom since 1921. When England and Scotland constituted Great Britain Ireland remained one of the two entity of a new European State, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. When the parliaments of the parts that formed the State were fused the new assembly was the parliament of United Kingdom. However the parity between the two nation was only formal. English first and British after treated Ireland like a colony. There was religious conflicts in the island. The protestant citizens, the minority, felt a tie with England first and Great Britain after, and they discriminated catholic population, the majority of Irish citizens. Therefore an important notice in the history of Ireland was the creation in 1791 of United Irishmen, first political association that reclaimed civil and political rights for all Irish citizens independently from religious faith. The Ireland obtained independency from United Kingdom in the last century. There was the election for the parliament in 1918. The Irish members refused to go to the assembly and the conflict broke out. The war finished with the signature of Anglo-Irish Treaty. The agreement proclaimed the creation of Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion in British Empire (Irish Free State reached complete independence in 1949 with the proclamation of Republic of Ireland), and Northern Ireland, entity of United Kingdom that was renamed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Even if the Irish part of the north European Country is one of the two entities of United Kingdom Great Britain considered Northern Ireland land of conquest. Also in this part of Ireland a lot of steps are being made in the last years. The Belfast Agreement re-established the parliament in Northern Ireland and Elisabeth went to the assembly in state visit. The British Queen has contributed for the construction of peace in Ireland in these years. The journey of Elisabeth in Eire finished in Dublin’s Castle. The Queen remarked the steps doing in the last years for peace and the ties between the Atlantic Countries. «Many Irish live, have relatives in Great Britain and many British live, have relatives in Ireland – Elisabeth said in her speech».
