The Irish citizens will elect, the 27th October, the ninth President of Ireland’s Republic. Eire is a parliamentary republic and the president has primarily representative function and some real powers. The candidates must be nominated by at least 20 members of parliament or four county or city councils. Mary McAleese is the current President of Eire. She is journalist, lawyer and Professor. She was a member of Fianna Fáil, a centrist party, member of European Liberal and Reform Party. There are, in this election, seven candidates.
The Fine Gael propose Gay Mitchell. He was, in the past, a member of the principal chamber of Irish parliament and Member of European Parliament. Fine Gael is a centre-right to centrist party, is a member of European Peoples Party, it’s a member of Centrist Democrat International and it’s a pro-european party. Fine Gael supported the European Costitution and Lisbon Treaty. The Sinn Féin nominate Martin McGuiness, the current Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. The Labour’s candidate is Michael Daniel Higgins. He’s the president of party. Irish Labour Party is the oldest party of Ireland. Higgins was a member of Irish parliament and also, he has been a Minister for Arts, Culture and Gaeltacht from 1993 to 1997. The ideology of Irish Labour Party are a Social Democracy and a Democratic Socialism. Also, there are four independent, Mary Davis, Séan Gallagher, David Norris and the former member of European Parliament, Dana Rosemary Scallon.
